Why Sauna Is Great for Detoxification: The Science of Heat-Driven Toxin Removal
Environmental toxins are all around us in today’s society. From microplastics to forever chemicals, pesticides, heavy metals, and hormone-disrupting compounds, these man-made chemicals can wreak havoc on our bodies. Some inhibit endocrine function, creating fatigue and fertility issues. Others drive inflammation—or worse, promote disease. Sauna detoxification is one of the few evidence-backed tools we have to support the body in clearing what it can’t eliminate on its own.
While the body has an amazing ability to detoxify itself, modern Denver life means we’re overloaded with particles our liver, kidneys, and lymph system simply can’t keep up with. Many of us have these toxins quietly circulating through our bodies. Heat is one of the most powerful exogenous tools to help.

How Sauna Detoxification Works
Heat induces sweating and a cascade of physiological processes that put the body into detoxification mode. The high heat of a traditional Finnish dry sauna—170 to 200°F—activates this response. The intensity increases circulation, supports liver and kidney function, and helps mobilize fat-soluble toxins so they can be pushed out of the body. Through intense, sustained sweating, the sauna helps eliminate compounds the body otherwise stores.
At ROK SPAS in Denver, we built our Nordic sauna specifically to deliver this clinical-grade heat profile. It’s the largest custom-designed sauna in Colorado, and it’s engineered for the duration and intensity that drive real detox results.
What the Bryan Johnson Sauna Experiment Showed
Bryan Johnson, the longevity-maximization expert, recently conducted an experiment testing the impact of daily traditional dry sauna sessions on hundreds of biomarkers. He saw improvements across nearly every marker, but one of the most striking was the massive reduction in environmental toxins and microplastics in his blood draws. The experiment is one of the cleanest demonstrations we have of how frequent sauna use supports the body’s detoxification process.

Tips for Maximizing Sauna Detoxification
1. Hydrate and replace electrolytes
With so much sweating, replacing fluid and minerals is essential. We recommend an electrolyte mix that balances sodium, potassium, and magnesium. Drink before, during breaks, and after every session.
2. Avoid wearing plastics
Much of modern workout and swimwear is polyester—essentially plastic. We recommend 100% cotton products in the sauna. Our ROK SPAS sauna shorts contain no plastics and look great if you want an option built for the modality.
3. Build the dose
Sauna benefits are dose-dependent—the more time you spend, the more they accrue. Experts recommend using the sauna four or more times a week for at least 20 minutes per session to capture the full benefits. Bring your friends and rack up your sauna time at ROK SPAS.
